노자 도덕경 30장, 무력을 절제하라.

군주를 보좌하는 사람은 

무력으로 군림하지 않도록 해야 한다.

무력을 쓰면 그 대가가 반드시 돌아온다.

군대가 머문 곳에는 가시덤불만이 자라고,

큰 전쟁이 있은 후에는 반드시 흉년이 든다.

훌륭한 사람은 목적을 이루면 그만둘 줄 알고,

힘으로 군림하지 않는다.

목적을 이룬 후에는 성공을 자랑하지 말고

능력을 뽐내지 말고

교만하게 굴지 말아야 한다.

목적을 이루었으나 그것은 어쩔 수 없이 한 일이다.

목적을 이룬 후에는 힘으로 군림하지 말아야 한다.

무엇이나 지나치게 강성하면 머지않아 쇠퇴한다.

이것은 도가 아니다.

도가 아닌 것은 일찍 끝나버린다.

 

以道佐人主者, 不以兵强於天下.

其事好還.

師之所處, 荊蕀生焉.

大軍之後, 必有凶年.

善者, 果而已矣, 不敢以取强.

果而勿矜, 果而勿伐, 果而勿驕.

果而不得已, 果而勿强.

物壯則老, 是謂不道, 不道早已.

Those who assist the monarch must not rule by force.

If you use force, you will surely get revenge.

Only thorns grow where the army stays, and there is always a famine after a great war.

A good man knows how to quit when he achieves his purpose, and does not rule by force.

After he has accomplished his purpose, he must not boast of his successes, nor show off of his abilities, nor be arrogant.

He accomplished his purpose, but he did it out of necessity.

After he has accomplished his purpose, he must not rule by force.

If anything is too strong, it will soon decline.

This is not the Tao.

What is not the Tao ends early.

 

老子 道德经 第30章 

 

依照“道”的原则辅佐君主的人，不以兵力逞强于天下。穷兵黩武这种事必然会得到报应。军队所到的地方，荆棘横生，大战之后，一定会出现荒年。善于用兵的人，只要达到用兵的目的也就可以了，并不以兵力强大而逞强好斗。达到目的了却不自我矜持，达到目的了也不去夸耀骄傲，达到目的了也不要自以为是，达到目的却出于不得已，达到目的却不逞强。事物过去强大就会走向衰朽，这就说明它不符合于“道”，不符合于“道”的，就会很快死亡。

도의 원칙에 따라 군주를 보좌하는 자는 병력으로 천하에 우쭐대지 않는다. 무력을 남용하는 이런 일은 반드시 응보를 받게 될 것이다. 군대가 가는 곳에는 가시밭길이 펼쳐지고, 큰 전쟁 후에는 반드시 흉년이 들 것이다. 용병을 잘하는 사람은 용병의 목적을 달성하면 그만이지, 병력이 강하다고 해서 잘 싸우는 것은 아니다. 목적을 달성하였으나 자만하지 않고, 목적을 달성하였으나 자랑하지 않으며, 목적을 달성하였으나 독선적으로 하지 마라. 목적을 달성하였으나 그것은 부득이한 것이었고, 목적을 달성하였으나 오히려 잘난 체하지 않는다. 사물은 과거에 강하면 곧 쇠락하고, 이는 곧 도에 맞지 않고 도에 맞지 않으면 곧 죽게 된다는 것을 의미한다.

 

Those who assist the monarch in accordance with the principles of the Tao shall not be proud of themselves as troops. This abuse of force will surely be punished. Wherever the army goes, it becomes a wasteland, and there will always be famines after the war. A person who is good at mercenaries can only achieve the purpose of mercenaries, but strong troops do not mean that they fight well. He achieved his goal, but he was not conceited, achieved his goal, but did not boast, achieved his goal, but did not do it on his own.
